Power in Numbers Concept Comes to Energy Choice in Southeast Pennsylvania

PAOLI, PA – February 10, 2011

Several group buying sites are known for offering daily discounts for restaurants, hotels and spas, but now Paoli-based Alphabuyer is taking group buying to another level by helping customers get discounts on their monthly bills.  Alphabuyer, a PUC approved provider, is launching its service with several utility offerings as energy rate caps expire in Southeastern Pennsylvania, including an electricity deal with Spark Energy, which was released today in a separate announcement.

“Until now, customers have felt powerless in trying to get better rates, options and terms for their monthly bills,” said Kevin Johnson, a co-founder of Alphabuyer.  “Starting today, Alphabuyer is giving customers a great option to reduce those expenses and save money.  The Internet provides a way for people to come together and use the power of the group to drive great savings, and that is exactly what we facilitate through our platform.”

Alphabuyer negotiates with suppliers to offer groups of consumers the most competitive rates on their monthly bills, such as electricity and natural gas. As an advocate for consumers, Alphabuyer not only lobbies for the best rates, but also the best options and features like no cancellation fees, upgradable agreements and no hidden fees.  (See related release for current electricity offers).

Alphabuyer is free to use, free to sign up and free to enroll in offers. Residential consumers can simply go to Alphabuyer.com and enter their zip code to view offers available in their area.

They can then compare different plans and prices, estimate potential savings and review details of the offer. Customers can sign up for the offer, then share it with friends and family. As more people sign up, the savings will get bigger and bigger as the size of the group grows. Once the offer closes, everyone gets the same discounted price.

Offers are available for a limited time period, and Alphabuyer makes switching suppliers easy and seamless. New offers are constantly being added, so customers can check back frequently for new deals.

Eventually, Alphabuyer will provide offers in other categories besides energy, such as cable, Internet and mobile phone service.

Suppliers benefit too because Alphabuyer delivers large groups of new customers at lower customer acquisition costs than other marketing channels.

Since launching its website in November 2010, Alphabuyer has already signed up over 2,000 prospective customers interested in current or future offers.

“Our ultimate goal is to help customers reduce household expenses that they are already paying for, and secure discounts for them in areas they didn’t even realize were possible,” said Mr. Johnson. “We are the conduit that provides consumers with the ability to enroll in the most competitive offers and programs in the marketplace.”

During the month of December 2010 and early January 2011, Alphabuyer, in cooperation with Shipley Energy, launched a highly successful pilot offer of its new natural gas platform.  The offer in the UGI Gas territory allowed select customers to achieve best-in-market pricing that they couldn’t have achieved on their own.  UGI Gas covers areas in Northeastern and Central Pennsylvania, and includes areas around: Allentown, Bedford, Bethlehem, Clearfield, Easton, Hamburg, Hazleton, Harrisburg, Huntington, Lancaster, Lock Haven, Oxford, Pottsville, Reading, Scranton, Shippensburg, Troy, Wilkes-Barre, and Williamsport.

According to Matt Sommer, Vice President of Natural Gas Operations at Shipley Energy, “Shipley Energy was pleased by the quick and meaningful response to this offer.  Everyone is a winner – customers were able to lower their monthly gas bills and Shipley Energy was able to dramatically lower its customer acquisition and marketing costs.”

Located in Paoli, PA, Alphabuyer is a new internet-based group buying platform that helps customers get the best possible rates, options and terms for services they pay for each month. Alphabuyer’s mission is to move group buying toward savings in areas where customers are already spending.  Their focus is on significant but under-serviced markets like energy, mobile phone and cable/internet that have not been introduced to the purchasing power of the group.

Alphabuyer is led by its founder and CEO Kevin Johnson.   Mr. Johnson founded Dryden Procurement Technologies, LLC, a cost containment company that has helped Fortune 100 companies spend more efficiently. Alphabuyer’s other executives are experienced in developing transaction e-commerce business to consumer websites and are experts in platform operations, globalization, consumer behavior, web analytics, product development and social media.  Joining CEO Kevin Johnson on the management team are CTO Richard Carragher and CMO John Raisch.  Each has considerable success working in other e-commerce and technology companies including GSI Commerce, CD Now and SAP.
